Farmers’ income will recover despite pandemic

Author  :  ZHANG SAI     Source  :    Chinese Social Sciences Today     2020-06-02

The annual per-capita disposable income of farmers may reach 17,000 RMB in 2020, the Green Book of Rural Areas on the Analysis and Forecast of China’s Rural Economy (2019–2020) predicts.

The Green Book highlights that the negative impacts of COVID-19 on China’s agricultural and rural economy mainly took place in the first quarter. On the whole, despite greater risks facing farmers’ income, the growth of farmer income will revitalize with the help of positive policies and effective epidemic control.

Benefiting from the support and assistance of the whole society, agricultural product e-commerce and other new business forms will develop rapidly, and the sales revenue of these products in povertystricken areas will bring a steady increase in net operating income. It is estimated that the per-capita disposable income of farmers in impoverished areas will be close to 13,000 yuan in 2020, with the growth amount and rate exceeding the per-capita disposable income of all farmers.

The Green Book emphasizes operating features, market conditions and the important progress of China’s agricultural and rural economy in 2019, predicts the development trends and major indicators in 2020, and proposes countermeasures. In particular it analyzes the conditions in 2019, including the income and expenses of rural residents, the poverty situation, the production and markets of major agricultural products, the development of the planting, forestry, animal product and fishery industries, and the trend of opening up the agricultural industry. It also predicts the overall trend in 2020. This report deeply discusses major and hot issues, such as the degree of realizing a moderately prosperous society in all respects, the digital development of the agricultural economy, the quality and sustainability of poverty alleviation, and the impact of COVID-19 on the agricultural and rural economy.
